CINDERELLA frontman Tom Keifer has revealed he once wrote a hit song about a woman he barely knew – and later married her.
The singer told the story recently onboard cruise ship the MSC Divina, asking fans during the band’s only shows of the year if they wanted to hear how he came to write “Heartbreak Station”, which reached 44 in the US singles charts 24 years ago.
“I’ve never told this story before,” he told fans in the Pantheon lounge during the Monsters Of Rock Cruise. “It’s a country blues song so it’s supposed to be sad.
“And it was sad in the beginning, but it had a happy ending.
“I’m going to take you back to Memphis Tennessee, many, many years ago. We were in town. I don’t remember if it’s a show or we were just kind of hanging out.
“There was this girl I had my eye on that night. We were hanging out in the lobby of the hotel and having a good time and I thought she was pretty cool.
“One thing led to another and the next thing I knew we were on the bus driving out of town and she was gone. And I swore … I didn’t know if I’d ever see her again.
“So I fell into a bottle of Nightrain that night and started writing a song about it.
“And the funny thing is, that girl came back into my life years later. I ended up marrying her. There’s the happy ending.
“So in reality, this song’s about Savannah.”
Keifer married Nashville singer-songwriter Savannah Snow in 2004 and they now have a 10-year-old son, Jaiden.
While Keifer has not been known for saying much on stage during Cinderella’s 31-year-career, his recent solo album and tour appear to have brought him out of his shell and encouraged him to expand on the origins of some songs.
